How to Care for Contact Lenses and Avoid Infections

A man looking in the mirror and putting in contact lensesContact lenses offer clear vision and freedom from glasses. However, proper care is essential to protect your eyes from infections.

At Central Valley Eye Medical Group, the San Joaquin Valley’s only general ophthalmology practice with fellowship-trained physicians, we often treat patients with issues related to improper contact lens care.

We’ve seen firsthand how poor hygiene and handling can lead to discomfort, eye infections, or long-term damage. Learn more about what you should and shouldn’t do below.

Essential Steps for Contact Lens Care

Here are some of the most important steps you can take for good eye health while wearing contacts:

  • Wash Your Hands: Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly before touching your lenses. This prevents transferring dirt, oil, or bacteria to your eyes.
  • Clean Your Lenses Daily: Use the recommended lens solution to clean your contact lenses. Never rinse them with tap water or saliva, as these contain harmful bacteria.
  • Use Fresh Solution: Replace the solution in your lens case every day. Do not “top off” the old solution, as it can harbor bacteria.
  • Store Lenses Correctly: Store your lenses in a clean, dry case filled with a fresh solution. To prevent contamination, replace the lens case every three months.
  • Follow Replacement Schedules: Whether you use daily, bi-weekly, or monthly lenses, always adhere to the replacement schedule provided by your eye doctor.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

In addition to following the guidelines shared above, there are also things you shouldn’t do to preserve your lenses and care for your eyes:

  • Sleeping with Lenses: Never sleep in your contact lenses unless your provider approves. This reduces oxygen to the eye and increases the risk of infection.
  • Swimming or Showering: Water can introduce harmful microorganisms that lead to infections. Remove lenses before swimming or showering.
  • Ignoring Symptoms: If you experience irritation, redness, unusual discharge, or blurry vision, remove your lenses immediately and consult an eye doctor. Early intervention can prevent complications.
