Fill Out the Holidays
Over the holidays, things can be too full. Take your stomach after the Thanksgiving dinner we just finished a few days ago. Or your house with the assortment of guests. And your to-do list at this time of year can seem to be overflowing.
One area that you could wish was a little fuller, however, is your lower face. This is especially true as we age, and our collagen production declines. This creates areas of volume loss, and it allows lines to form.

What’s the deal with volume loss?
It’s a rude joke, but the more we laugh and smile, the more we develop smile and laugh lines that run from the nose down to the corners of the mouth. In fact, the more we move our mouth, we develop lines all around it. Marionette lines sag downward from the corners. Parentheses lines frame each side, like the punctuation marks. Barcode lines form above the upper.
Bogus.
It’s all a factor of collagen loss. After we have our 20th birthday, our bodies produce one additional percentage point less collagen every year. By the time we’re 50 that means our bodies are producing 30 percent less collagen. Since collagen is the protein that provides structural support for the skin, it’s no wonder we start to sag and develop lines and creases in our skin. It doesn’t help that our skin also thins as we age.
Hyaluronic acid to the rescue
Dermal fillers can replace some of that lost volume. Juvéderm, Restylane, and Belotero all do this with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body whose job is to hydrate and plump the skin. It does this by binding with water molecules.
When one of our dermal fillers is injected beneath a line or area of volume loss, the hyaluronic acid binds with nearby water molecules, instantly adding volume and pushing the depressed skin back upwards.
