Can Cataracts Return After Surgery?

A woman with cataracts looking at her phoneCataract surgery is one of the most common eye procedures performed worldwide. According to research published by StatPearls, it also has a success rate of 95%.

Most people do not experience any complications following their procedure. However, it’s still normal to wonder, “Can cataracts come back after surgery?”

At Central Valley Eye Medical Group, our board-certified and fellowship-trained ophthalmologists often hear this question from concerned patients. The short answer is no, but there’s a bit more to the story.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts cause clouding of your eye’s natural lens, usually due to aging. This cloudiness can blur vision, reduce color contrast, and make everyday tasks, such as reading or driving, difficult.

During cataract surgery, an ophthalmologist removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The result is a significant improvement in vision.

Can Cataracts Reappear?

Cataracts cannot return once the natural lens is removed. However, some people notice vision changes months or years after surgery. This condition is called posterior capsule opacification (PCO). Sometimes, it’s also referred to as a “secondary cataract.”

PCO occurs when the thin capsule that holds your new artificial lens becomes cloudy, mimicking the symptoms of cataracts. If this happens, don’t worry. It’s easy to treat.

Treating Secondary Cataracts

If you’re diagnosed with posterior capsule opacification, your ophthalmologist may recommend a quick and painless procedure called YAG laser capsulotomy. This laser treatment:

  • Creates a small opening in the capsule.
  • Restores clear eyesight almost immediately.
  • Requires no incisions or downtime.

Results are noticeable very soon after surgery. Most patients see improvements in 24 hours.

When to See Your Eye Doctor

If you’ve had cataract surgery and have blurry vision again, consult your ophthalmologist. Early evaluation ensures an appropriate response and rules out other eye issues, like macular degeneration or glaucoma.
