iDesign is a recent development in the performance of the LASIK procedure, and represents the most advanced laser vision correction technology to date. A wavefront-guided procedure, the iDesign Refractive Studio integrates corneal topography that guides the ophthalmologist through the LASIK procedure using the most accurate measurements of the patient’s eyes.

iDesign FAQ’s

Historically, LASIK procedures were guided by data related to the patient’s most recent eyeglass prescription. This information was used to reshape the cornea with the utmost precision. However, studies have indicated that a person’s eyeglass prescription is only part of their vision story. To improve the outcome of the LASIK procedure the iDesign Refractive Studio provides the surgeon with the most detailed map of the corneal surface, including how well the cornea and lens are refracting light.

Accurate measurements regarding the refraction of light means that the doctor knows just how rays of light are bent before they reach the retina at the back of the eye. This measurement indicates the degree of correction the ophthalmologist must achieve to suit specific vision needs. In short, iDesign technology significantly reduces the amount of guesswork involved in refractive correction.

If we compare the LASIK iDesign Refractive Studio to another advanced technology, such as CustomVue LASIK, we note that iDesign technology measures over 1250 points on the cornea, as opposed to 240 points.

The iDesign procedure is streamlined just like any other LASIK procedure. Patients can expect their doctor to need just a few minutes per eye to complete their laser eye surgery.

No. The mapping of the cornea is completely painless and takes less than five seconds to create a three-dimentional guide for the LASIK procedure. Patients then receive topical anesthetic eyedrops and a gentle sedative before the laser reshapes the cornea.

Using the proprietary technology in iDesign, the doctor can build a three-dimensional model or map of the patient’s eye, and tailor the LASIK to each patient, thereby correcting myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, as well as higher-order aberrations that were previously untreatable. Reducing higher-order aberrations decreases subtle imperfections that result in glare, halos, and poor nighttime vision, overall resulting in better quality vision.
